Guardrail metrics worth watching during A/B tests
A checkout button that lifts conversion while raising refunds is not a win. Guardrail metrics exist to catch those trades before they reach customers at scale.
Useful guardrails sit close to the change. If you alter onboarding copy, watch early drop-off and support ticket volume. If you change a paywall layout, watch refund rate, payment failure rate, and day-seven retention — not only first-day conversion.
Keep the guardrail list short. Three to five measures that the team already trusts beat a dashboard of twenty lines nobody reads. Each guardrail needs an owner and a pre-agreed threshold that would pause the test.
Latency and crash rates belong on the list whenever the variant includes heavier media, new SDKs, or extra network calls. Performance analytics and experiment analytics meet here: a slower variant can look worse on conversion simply because fewer people finish the flow.
During the readout, present primary and guardrail outcomes side by side. If the primary metric improves and a guardrail worsens past threshold, the default recommendation is iterate — not ship with a footnote.
